Second Annual First Day Hike - Saratoga Spa State Park ~ Jan 1, 2015

Journal entry by Wanderer

With blue skies and temperatures in the 20's I don't know if Tom could have picked a better day for a walk-about of the 5-mile trail at Saratoga Spa State Park and the Canes 2nd Annual First Day Hike. Thank you Tom!

Compared to last year's 12 degree temperature and fresh snow this was a treat as Tom led our group of 24 New Years day revelers on a meandering route through the park, past many of the natural areas, as well as some of the more well known man-made facilities such as SPAC, Peerless Pool and some of the pavilions that dot the park. The only thing missing was snow - none to be found anywhere and a little sad since 'tis the season that we expect at least a coating.

For whatever reason, Tom's pace was quick and focused and the distance seemed to disappear and before we realized it was lunch time. However, with only about thirty minutes remaining to hike the decision was made by the group to abandon plans to have lunch at one of the pavilions and to return to the warming hut where there was heat and bathrooms. I think the vote was unanimous!

Arriving at the warming hut there was a fire going from a prior group so all that was needed was to add a few logs, find a seat and start eating and continue visiting. Not quite so fast I said "I have been carrying wine, Champagne and thermoses filled with mulled cider, enough for all, for most of the hike and it is time to bring in the New Year right, so out came the cups and the drinks were shared. Tom made a toast and modeled his new Yellow coat! Maryanne will be happy!

Great day amongst friends! See you all next year for the 3rd annual First Day Hike.
