A-Team hike to Shippee's Ledge ~ Jan 13, 2017

Journal entry by Don McMcMahon

My thermometer said just above freezing when I left the house but it seemed a lot cooler at the trailhead with significant wind. We started (and ended) with a crew of 15 ( 2 Jims, 2 Rebers, 2 Woods, 2 Lindas, Joyce, Scott, JoEllen, Tom, Ray, Margie and me) not bad for a Friday the 13th. With a snowmobile trail to follow and well compressed snow, the walking was ideal for microspikes and, in spite of a late start, we arrived at the outlook in less than an hour, at 11:15 - too early to have lunch was the consensus. Also too breezy to be comfortable at the ledge overlooking Sacandaga Lake. So we continued on another snowmobile trail heding north again for another quarter hour, finding then yet another packed snowmibile trail leading us back uphill toward the ledges. Shortly after coming upon our original trail to the ledges, we stopped for lunch in an open area in full sunlight - a warm and comfortable spot out of the breeze. After lunch the walk downhill back toward the cars did not take long. A good day to be out in mid winter to be sure!

At one point to re-group, a strange noise, like from a porcupine in a tree was heard by Lenore but nothing was ever seen - remains a mistery!
