Lens Lake paddle ~ Jul 5, 2017

Journal entry by Fran Herve

I feel that the most difficult thing about leading a trip is deciding what to do when the weather forecast is uncertain. This is exactly what happened this time. Five days before our scheduled paddle the meteorologists started talking about thunderstorms. Then on Monday things improved with a lower chance of rain and then on Tuesday thunderstorms were back on the radar. Not wanting to be stuck in a thunderstorm in the middle of the lake I decided to change the plans and move our paddle to Wednesday especially since Wednesday was predicted to be a gorgeous day. Of course I wondered how many would join me; however I was surprised to find just one person at the Lake Luzerne meeting point and only two more at the Lens Lake boat launch. This being a holiday week we figured many were traveling or spending the day hiking or biking with other groups.

The lake looked so peaceful and inviting that we quickly unloaded our boats, hopped in and started paddling through all the channels and inlets meandering through the bog islands and coves. The sky was clear blue with a few puffy white clouds and the sun was shining brightly so this was the perfect day to explore at leisure, get close to the tiny bog islands to study the unique carnivorous plants like the pitcher plants and the rose pogonia orchids and take photos. This is a heaven for birds and we saw and heard loons, red wing black birds, swallows, sandpipers and many others.

We returned to shore for a leisurely lunch at the picnic table with plenty of conversation and then went on to explore the other side of the lake. After another hour or so on the water we packed our boats and said our goodbyes.

Thanks to Peter and Linda and Linda P. for joining me on another wonderful day in the Adirondacks. I hope all our friends had an equally delightful day.
